Philosophy of Healing

Philosophy of Healing

Barbara Shaw

Our body, mind, emotions and spirit are interconnected. What we experience in any one aspect affects our whole being.

My philosophy of healing begins with the knowledge that Health is always present. It is the starting place for healing and the heart of holistic practice.

Health manifests itself daily through myriad self-regulating and healing mechanisms in our body and psyche. As an Osteopath and Massage Therapist I use the self-regulating wisdom of the body to assess, treat and augment your healing and health maintaining processes.

Our body, mind, emotions and spirit are interconnected. What is experienced in any one aspect of the self, affects our whole being, bringing change either towards or away from health. We also know that personal health is supported and affected by the health of our family, work places, community and the environment. Health can also be seen to flourishe when we come into harmony with the cycles of the seasons and the changing stages of our lives.

Grounded in this way, I find bodywork effective, empowering and inspiring. It offers not only release from the pain and tension one may feel, but the wisdom to understand why it is there. Body centered practice is a tangible yet gentle way to transform the emotions, memories and experiences that manifest in physical discomfort, mental distress and emotional imbalance.

The work I offer is often called complimentary and alternative or holistic. I feel a more responsible and client serving model is collaborative, promoting knowledge across professions which refer and work together. As an Osteopath I rely on the medical system to support my treatments through appropriate diagnostic testing, scans and lab work. When working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression or with PTSD I strongly recommend counselling. For all clients, I support their ongoing use of prescribed medications and regular consultation with their Doctor, and in times of need we should all be very grateful for the skills of emergency and surgical teams. We strengthen our services by working together.
